What to ask a hospital directly

Public data does not answer everything. These questions do, and any maternity unit should be able to answer them.

  • What level of newborn care do you provide? 3
  • Is a neonatologist in the hospital at all times, or on call from home?
  • Can you perform an emergency cesarean at any hour, and what is your usual time from decision to incision? 4
  • Is anesthesia in the hospital at all times?
  • Do you offer therapeutic hypothermia, or would a baby be transferred? 5
  • If my baby needed a higher level of care, where would they go and how would they get there?
  • Do you take part in the Leapfrog survey? 2

If you are planning a birth and something in your pregnancy is higher risk, the question of where to deliver is worth asking early. Transferring a mother before birth is generally safer than transferring a baby afterward. 3

Why does this tool not just show me the data?

Because mirroring it would go stale without anyone noticing, and neither CMS nor Leapfrog publishes a stable open feed of maternity measures that we could keep current. Sending you to the source means you see what is published today, with its own date attached. 1 2

My hospital has no maternity rating. Is that bad?

No. The Leapfrog survey is voluntary, so a hospital that does not take part has no results, and CMS does not publish every maternity measure for every hospital. 2 1 Read a missing result as missing, and ask the hospital directly instead.

What matters most about where I give birth?

For most people, very little changes the outcome. Where something in the pregnancy is higher risk, the level of newborn care available matters, and so does whether a mother can be transferred before the birth rather than the baby afterward. 3 Ask the questions above.
